According to the idea that society always represses
minority and its variations, those within have always fought against
injustice and conformism.
istory of the world is ridden with episodes of
hypocrisy and sad cases of intolerance. It was not different to
the GLBT community (Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgenders).
In the past they used to hear menacing words, like: dirty, sin,
freak, impure, subversive, libidinous, and promiscuous and scumbag,
to name a few.
Whichever side they would stand on, there would
be someone to point out a finger.
hey could keep quiet and not become "menace
to the society", but they gave their faces to slap. That
was the last resort in order to acquire respect. It took many
years to the GLBT community to reach out their own space in society.
In fact, t a lot remains yet to be unconquered, but if we look
harder into the past, we would come to realize the greatness of
their acts and at what expenses in our days.
Gays Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgenders have
their chunk in every segment of society, today. Disrespect and
hypocrisy still much part of modern life, though gradually, it
has become more acceptable to see two men or two women kissing
in the streets. On television we can naturally see shows starred
by gay folks.
This kind of entertainment helped gay-rights protestors
on their crusade against prejudice. In fact, people started to
realize that gay people are just as normal as them, with just
one little difference: sexual orientation. TV shows like Queer
Eye for the Straight Guy and Will and Grace made the gay concept
to me better ranked on people's concept of right and wrong.
Internet and its huge variation of webpages can
be considered a very gay-friendly place. There are millions of
home pages hosting gay content, like information, ONGs, products,
sexual content and the like. Internet also helps the gay society
to come out of the closet, if we think that people can meet other
gay-friendly on chat rooms, for example.
Encouraging ways of helping people not to be ashamed
of what they are and feel it's often widespread on internet. With
a quick search procedure the gay-orientated mind can get wired
up to a huge and intense world of information and support.
